Matthew Bruce Tenor

Welcome to Music Matthew

Growing up in a musical family in Vancouver, BC, I began to develop my passion for the performing arts through exposure to many rich and varied performances.

My foundation in the vocal arts was cultivated through singing in choirs, churches, and festivals. Leaving high school brought on the reality of carving one's path, so I embarked on stocking grocery shelves and working on cruise ships . . . eventually pursuing a college degree in Computer Science.

Several years in that environment convinced me to refocus my passion to singing. I continued my education with a 2-year diploma from the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, BC in 2010. I was thrilled to accept, then graduate, from a further 2-year involvement with Calgary Opera's Emerging Artist Development Program in 2015. This two-year intensive provided the opportunity to study with some of Canada's finest coaches and singers, expanding both my knowledge and performance of opera and musical theater repertoire. I have since been busy performing comprimario roles in Western Canada.

Exciting opportunities were performing on the main stage of Calgary Opera as 'Candide' (Opera in the Village, August 2014), 'Jonathan Dale' ('Silent Night', Nov 2014), and as 'Le Dancaïre' ('Carmen', Apr 2015). In its 'Opera in the Village 2016 Festival', I performed the role of The Witch in “Hansel and Gretel”, along with a selection of opera's greatest hits. I appeared in Pacific Opera's productions of "Mary's Wedding", “Macbeth” as Malcolm and as Roderigo in Verdi's “Otello”.

After a successful run as Emperor Altoum with Edmonton Opera's "Turandot" October 2016, I appeared again in the same role in Calgary Opera's “Turandot" April 2017. The following two weeks I enjoyed singing the male lead in Cowtown Opera's "YYC to NYC" Broadway Review.

Spring 2018 was an exciting time for me performing as Major Shelley in Theater Calgary's production of "The Secret Garden". Autumn was also fulfilling, entertaining crowds as Eisenstein in Cowtown Opera's Halloween-themed parody of "The Bat" ('Die Fledermaus').

Another satisfying experience has been recently singing the role of the High Priest in Drumheller's "Badlands Passion Play" in July 2019.

I have recently relocated from Western Canada to Toronto and the surrounding area to continue my musical journey!
